Global Impact Organisation, Circle Economy, Partners with Enviu to Unveil Insights on Measuring Circularity in Smallholder Agricultural Systems in East Africa
Nairobi, Kenya, Monday 18th September - Circle Economy, a global impact organisation that empowers businesses, cities, and nations with practical and scalable solutions to put the circular economy into action, has released an article that delves into the measurement of circularity within the agriculture sector in East Africa, titled "Measuring circularity of small-holder agricultural systems."
Authored by Circle Economy's team of experts, this article uses Enviu’s unique market-driven approach to showcase how an interlinked ecosystem of business ventures can create a closed-loop system that drives down post-harvest food waste and mimic the regenerative cycles found in nature, where waste from one process becomes a valuable input for another.
-Evaluating metrics and indicators that agri/food companies and stakeholders can use to measure and monitor their performance.
-Introducing circular economy metrics that monitor the sustainability of farming practices and post-harvest loss.
-Identifying limitations and outlining future needs for Kenyan smallholder farmers to apply circular farming techniques.
-The article serves as a conversation starter on how equally relevant circularity metrics are within the Kenyan context.
As Enviu works to future-proof Kenya’s food production system in partnership with the IKEA Foundation, there is an opportunity to follow how these learnings on circularity practices and metrics could be applied within the context of smallholder farmers transitioning to regenerative agriculture in Kenya’s Makueni County.
