Enviu Successfully Pilots a Reusable Glass Bottle Solution in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, Wednesday 22nd November - Enviu's Mission Reuse is proud to announce the successful conclusion of its pilot project, conducted in collaboration with multiple HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, Cafe) venues in Rotterdam, aimed at drastically reducing glass waste in the Dutch hospitality sector.  

Single-use glass, a common packaging material, has become a ticking time bomb in the battle for a sustainable future. Surprisingly, it is more environmentally detrimental than plastic packaging, mainly due to its weight and the immense energy demands during its production and recycling.  

Under the right conditions, research showed that a reusable alternative to single use glass could reduce carbon emissions by a staggering 28% per usage cycle. 

Mission Reuse found that HoReCa venues are key drivers for change in this value chain. Though some glass packaging of beer, soda, and water is already being reused, single-use glass bottles appeared to pose challenges of high costs and excessive volumes for these venues. During the pilot, the focus was on understanding the practical implications of a reusable alternative and gauging the willingness for collection.

In the coming months, Mission Reuse will integrate learnings from the pilot into a comprehensive roadmap for progress. This will serve as the foundation for raising awareness among governments, businesses, and consumers, as well as influencing legislation. All with the vision of replacing single-use glass bottles in the hospitality industry with sustainable alternatives on a larger scale, and subsequently extending this paradigm shift to the broader market.
